Strict Action Against Ragging (Updated)

Taking a bold stance against ragging, the National Institute of Technology (VNIT) put behind bars six of its final year students of Mechanical Branch who were found guilty of ragging third year students during first week of January this year.

[IMG]The charges against the six are that on January 5, around 9 pm they barged into hostel of third year students and allegedly assaulted a student after latter did not reveal address of his friend against whom they had a grouse. This student suffered injuries on his back, hands and legs. The six did not stop at just that but forced entire third year batch to hostel terrace where they were made to lie with head down and legs up. For nearly two hours the third year students underwent torture and the security guard nor Hostel Warden got a whiff of the incident.

Only after the student who was assaulted lodged a complaint with the Dean did the matter came to limelight. An inquiry committee was set up which found the six students guilty of ragging and recommendation against them under the Anti-Ragging Act. Also, they recommended withdrawing Training and Placement certificate given to those students. This means those students would be automatically barred from Campus Interview Process.

I think it happens rarely that such strict measures are taken against the students.

What do you think about this incident? Is it important that the authorities take strict action against the students found involved in a ragging activity? Or should they take the matter lightly?

UPDATE:

One of the readers of VoiCE who is apparently a student of VNIT has reported that, the 3rd years who filed complaint are regular trouble makers. The final year students were trying to convince them to stop creating troubles. According to him, they were trying to blackmail the offenders. This is the reason why the complaint was lodged and arrest was made 24 days after the incidence took place.

We reported this news on the basis of articles published in Hitavada and TOI. The reader has also mentioned that these newspapers should take their journalism a bit more seriously when students' careers and lives are at stake.

Are there any VNIT students reading this post willing to share the 'true story' with us? We'd be happy to bring it out for everyone.
