First country to introduce mobile phones in South Asia in 1989 and first to introduce 3G in 2004, it seems Sri Lanka is ahead of the sub-continent when it comes to mobile technology. A whopping $26.25 million is what Dialog Axiata, Sri Lanka's largest cellular operator, paid to win the auction for the 10Mh band in 1,800 spectrum that is soon to become South Asia's first 4G network. The auction occurred on Thursday and the money raised from the spectrum sale has set a new record for highest amount earned from auction of airwaves. The 4G/LTE mobile network is expected to be four to five times faster than the current 3G network. Sri Lanka has fixed-line telephone 4G available throughout its major cities but a nationwide accessible high-speed internet is a first. The network infrastructure is already planned and consequently, the 4G network is supposed to roll out "shortly".

The five mobile phone operators in the country are being encouraged to adapt newer standards to meet the demands of the growing customer base.
