Just before Christmas, Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movie franchise Sam Smith/Dr. Evil Cold Open - Saturday Night Live - YouTube that alleged North Korean hacking group Guardians of Peace should not have picked on Sony because they havenât had a hit since the Walkman, forgetting the fact that Sony makes PlayStations too. Just a few months ago we heard news about the iPod Classic being discontinued. This news left music lovers in despair. They were people who wanted a no-frills music player that could carry their entire music collection. Sony has come to the rescue of these audiophiles by announcing the NW-ZX2 Walkman. Apart from a large 128GB internal storage which can expanded to up to 256GB with the help of another 128GB microSD card, the Sony Walkman NW-ZX2 claims to provide high-resolution audio.
When you listen to a song that has been encoded in any compressed music format like mp3 you lose some of the high-frequency musical information that was recorded in the studio. Sonyâs DSEE HX processing recreates those missing frequencies by up scaling the audio. Next we have Sonyâs S-Master HX full digital amplifier that keeps all signal processing digital. The reason for keeping the signal processing digital is to prevent degradation in the transition between analogue and digital and vice versa. Even if you stream music to a Bluetooth speaker you wonât witness any loss in quality as the new Walkman supports LDAC codec. Sony also includes a NFC chip to make Bluetooth speaker pairing easier. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi and microUSB.
Sony has built the NW-ZX2 Walkman with an anodised aluminium body. It sports a 4.0 inch FWVGA (854x480) resolution display with Sonyâs proprietary Triluminos display technology. The NW-ZX2 Walkman however runs a rather dated Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) on an undisclosed chipset. Since it is an Android device Sony duly includes Google Play. So you can safely say the Sony Walkman NW-ZX2 is a serious Apple iPod Touch competitor. The Sony Walkman NW-ZX2 gets fully charged in 4.5 hours and it provides up to 30 hours of music playback.
Finally we have to deliver the kicker, the Sony Walkman NW-ZX2 costs $1120 or 70,960 INR. The music player will be sold in American and European markets from spring 2015. If you do not want to spend a premium and get the same features you can opt for its older brother, the NW-ZX1 that costs nearly half of the price of its sibling.
