Sony Demos SmartAR*1 Integrated Augmented Reality Technology To Explode Our Minds

Sony's SmartAR*1 Integrated Augmented Reality Technology will surely blow your mind. The concept of Augmented Reality is not entirely new and if you have a smart phone, it already has an application that lets your device create virtual objects in the real world. However, until now the technology suffered from lag issues, mostly arising due to synchronization issues between the hardware (camera) and software. Rendering graphics captured through camera and then processing virtual objects on the top of it is lot of work for any modern processor, but Sony has take a step ahead and demonstrated that their SmartAR*1 technology has bridged this gap. Following demo video says more than we can through words -

Sony SmartAR is indeed smart, quick and extremely accurate in terms of object recognition, marking borders and rendering virtual stuff on it. What's more interesting is that the technology is capable of rendering smaller 3D areas and large 3D areas with equal ease. No doubt Sony will make loads of money by integrating this technology in their future mobile phones, possibly in gaming consoles and handheld devices, say GPS. It's interesting to note that Sony began working on augmented reality way back in 1994 with 2 dimensional bar-code recognition. In 1998, they launched the VAIO "PCG-C1" which featured actual implementation of this technology. The USP of Smart AR technology is that it's very rapid and accurate in recognizing 3D space. Under the hood, Sony achieved this by combining their object recognition technology with Sony's proprietary matching technology.
