Project Abstract / Summary : Energy is the core requirement to 'run the world', figuratively speaking. The extraction of this energy for one of the basic amenities of modern world, that is electricity, has become quite a challenge in the view of sustainability and environmental issues associated with the most common sources present. In order to lift ourselves out of this foreseen crisis, it is imperative to utilize one of the most feasible and sustainable natural sources: The Sun.

Our analysis aims at determining the potential solar energy generated if the current owners of concrete rooftops opt for solar energy as an alternative source. The techniques used involve extensive use of Remote Sensing and GIS for evaluating the probable installation density variation with area and the potential amount of electrical energy that can be effectively utilized as being generated through the PV panels.

Since we Indians are naturally obsessed with cost effectiveness, an economic analysis involving the installation capital involved and the corresponding electricity generated in terms of present MSEB costs will be performed. The return over investment period of the projects will also be found out and all of this will be presented in a consolidated manner.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : The analysis will help in establishing a sustainable and self sufficient energy based economic model. This kind of project is extremely valuable for regions like Nagpur cities which receives high solar radiations owing to its climate and location. Not only that, a smaller but a comparative model can be developed for rural areas which are still facing energy scarcity without being relied upon nonrenewable resources for power generation.
