Solar cell efficiency world record broken by 1%
When it comes to converting the solar energy into electricity, every percent counts. Spectrolab, which held the world record of developing solar cells with an efficiency of 37.8% has broken its own record by a percent, with a new ground-based multi-junction solar cell with an efficiency of 38.8%. It's important to note that efficiency of about 44% has already been achieved by using lens-based system to concentrate solar rays on the triple-junction compound solar cells.
Spectrolab is a sister company of Boeing and has been a part of Boeing Defense, Space & Security unit; and has done groundbreaking work in the solar energy domain. Boeing's engineer believe that with the new record efficiency, they can now look to use solar power in high-power spacecraft and also in unmanned aerial vehicles.
