SMILING Project

European Commission's 7th RTD Framework Programme has commenced The 'SMILING Project' to improve mobility in elderly project. SMILING stands for Self Mobility Improvement in the eLderly by counteractING falls. According to surveys conducted, 33% of elderly people over age 65 have had experience of falling resulting into injuries, emotional disturbance and avoiding mobility. Generally, aging is characterized by changes in senses functionality & lost of posture balance. The SMILING project aims to improve mobile abilities in elderly via development of equipments to aid in mobility and training especially for everyday actions like climbing stairs, standing up, walking on ground and sitting in chair. The research is simultaneously being conducted in Israel & USA and has revealed that aging is responsible for muscle weakness & delayed responses by Central Nervous System. The researchers have developed a wearable computer-aided systems that lower the extremities during the motion on slopes, stairs and on ground.
