If you are fond of tossing paper into the trash can and aren't incredibly good at throwing the paper balls into the basket, Japanese engineer Minoru Kurata has a solution for you. Kurata has designed what he calls a 'Smart Trash' that determines figures out your bad throws and then automatically moves the trash can so that the paper balls fall right into the can. Kurata recently won an excellence award for his innovation at the Japan Media Arts Festival. Check out the following video to see the trash can in action -

As soon as you throw a paper ball, a wall-mounted sensor detects and calculates the accurate position of it and then quickly directs the trash-can to adjust its position accordingly. For this to happen, the trash can must move quickly in all the possible directions. This required Kurata to develop a special mechanism. One of the challenges was to maintain the center of gravity low so that as the can moves - it doesn't fall.

Kurata has already applied for the patent and considering the possibility of making it a commercial product. However, the sensor needs some work. Currently the probability of the trash going into the can is only 20% and Kurata is already working on improving it. Interesting, isn't it?
