The Panama Canal that opened in 1914 is considered the world's greatest civil engineering project.

This is a nice slide show, a fine piece of engineering history.

Those pencil sketches and B&W photographs are precious. I just went through the comments on that blog. The title says that this is the greatest engineering project and people are discussing whether it has been eclipsed with newer projects. Every generation see its own set of best creations. But with the technology available at that time - chainsaws, dynamite, steam engines and more importantly the manual labor - that project deserves a hats off gesture from all the engineers around. 👍
