Skype Squeezes In Ads For Non-Subscriber Conversations

There's no such thing as a free lunch, they say. If you are a non-subscriber and regularly use the free calling feature on Skype, you might as well expect the in-conversation ads or The Conversation Ads, as Skype likes to call it, in your window soon enough. Though, if you're on a Mac or any other operating system apart from Windows, you are probably free of that requirement for now. The ads are only a part of audio calls, and not video. Skype also assures that the quality of conversations will not be compromised because of the ads.

The ads intend to use location, gender and age data for targeting. Though users have the choice to conceal some data by going to the Privacy menu under Tools, still Skype will persist to use the location data.

What a party pooper, one'd think, but Skype seems to be rather enthusiastic about its new advertising layout. Skype believes that the ads will strike "meaningful conversations" between the users about the product being advertised. Well, that's one solution to awkward silences.
