A new app called 'Be My Eyes' has been developed to help the blind get help from a community of people who can see. The folks behind the app believe that the app can be a medium for doing your small acts of kindness. Using it, you can help a blind person remotely via a live audio-video connection. The sighted users can guide the person based on what he or she can see through the phone's rear camera. Whenever a blind person needs assistance, he can use the app to ask for help. The 'Be My Eyes' helper network will be alerted and whoever's available immediately can help him out. As for the different kinds of helps that a blind person may need, it can be anything from finding out the expiry date on a milk carton to finding the way around a public place.

Among the additional features, there's an option to choose all the languages you know so that it is easy for the blind person to communicate in his native language.

The app came into existence when Hans Jørgen Wiberg, who is visually impaired himself, presented his idea for such an app at a startup event in Denmark. Here he met his co-founders and the app was launched in January this year.

The app is open source and in case you're wondering how blind people can use an iPhone, well, there's feature called #-Link-Snipped-# that provides for synthetic speech and touch-based interface.

With the Be My Eyes app live on iTunes store, users can join a network of volunteers, earn points, level up and in turn be a part of a real change in people's lives.
