The way Mac handles files is a bit messy.
As data changes through daily use, photos, text files and other things get mixed up with system files. Despite Mac OS X’s default defragmentation work, this is a problem for disk performance and, inevitably, system performance at large.

Should I partition my mac hard drive? What are the long term gains?

PS: Expert advice will help beginners with Mac. 😉

Mac is based upon Unix OS. Partitioning in Unix allows would allow you to separate the system files and user files. One partition can be made for "/", the partition the system boots from. Another partition can be made for "/home", the partition where user accounts are stored. That's one possible way to do it. You will get a boost in performance because the user files are isolated in a tighter physical area on the drive vs. being spread out. Fragmented files are accessed quicker due to a shorter range needed to find them.

It also adds another element of security in the case of a crash of your system partition, your user files will be ok. Some will even use a usb drive or portable hard disk as a home drive.

#-Link-Snipped-# tool helps you easily partition, create, delete, hide, resize the Mac partition or volumes. It helps you manage your Mac partitions and enhance your hard disk performance.
