Unit Description:
The Electronic Systems (ES) unit supports COMPANY clients with electronics and software development capabilities; the unit also supports COMPANY IR&D needs. The ES unit is a multidisciplinary group of professionals with expertise in power electronics and controls, signal processing, software, systems engineering, and other related disciplines. The unit is expanding to increase the breadth and depth of its expertise. Within COMPANY, the ES unit supports a number of initiatives including motor control, power conversion/management, and magnetometer sensors, among others. The unit is also active in identifying and building business in new market initiatives including hybrid portable power and hybrid vehicle systems. These initiatives require the integration of engine-generator, battery and, in some cases, fuel cell sources. Other initiatives include the development of magnetometer based products for commercial and military applications. All of the internal and external initiatives are multidisciplinary in nature and require significant and engaged interaction between members of the ES unit as well as with professionals in other units across COMPANY.

Job Summary (Purpose):
Power electronics engineer will work with interdisciplinary teams in technology and prototype development. The position requires good interpersonal and communication skills to support effective project teams.

Major Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Controls and Software Engineering (design/code/test) to support prototype development constitutes the bulk of the duties for this position when combined with the hardware responsibilities (see below). The ideal candidate will have experience in control system design and modeling. The candidate will have experience in software development processes and tools and will have used these in developing power electronics control systems including (1) embedded code for direct interaction with power electronics components and (2) communications protocols, e.g., CAN, for distributed sensing and control. The candidate will have an intimate knowledge of the interaction between remote sensors and processors, communications protocols, and software coding, testing, and documentation. Tasks will include developing and documenting system and software requirements and specifications, development of database and software architecture, and managing and implementing software test and verification/validation plans and procedures. The candidate will directly plan and implement software modules for rapid prototyping for internal and customer applications. Any code produced will be thoroughly debugged to produce a quality product as a component of a total system integration. The successful candidate will leverage experience with software development tools and processes to maximize the effectiveness and timeliness of generating bug-lite code. (85% when combined with HW)

Hardware Engineering (design/build/test) to support prototype development constitutes the bulk of the duties for this position when combined with software responsibilities (see above). The ideal candidate will have experience in hardware development processes and tools and will have used these in developing power electronic systems for applications such as hybrid portable power systems or hybrid vehicles. The candidate will have an intimate knowledge of the interaction between the power electronics and the surrounding systems including, for example, intermediate storage, the power grid, motors, and generators. Design responsibilities will include development, evaluation, and final selection of power circuit topologies, circuit components, protective measures, and control policies to meet performance and cost objectives. The candidate will be skilled at modeling system control policies and detailed power circuit performance using tools such as MatLab/Simulink and Spice. The candidate will have experience with digital signal processor (DSP) execution of power electronic control policies; it is expected that this experience will have included the development of code and implementation of DSP interfaces between power circuits, sensors, and data links to surrounding system modules. Working knowledge of electrical machinery design and control methods is essential.

Tasks at COMPANY will include developing and documenting hardware requirements and specifications, development of hardware architecture, and participating in the development of hardware test and verification/validation plans and procedures. The candidate will develop electronic schematics, work with staff and vendors for layout, fabrication, and assembly and will test boards and systems upon delivery. Essential experience is required in analog and digital electronics design including schematic capture (e.g., Protel, Viewlogic ...) and embedded digital controllers (e.g., DSPs, microprocessors, microcontrollers ...). In addition, for design and analysis purposes, familiarity with digital and analog power electronics simulation and modeling tools is required. (85% when combined with SW)

Innovation and technology development constitutes an important but lower time commitment as part of the candidate?s duties. Examples of this work include support to brainstorming sessions, invention disclosures, and innovations research proposals. (15%)

Required Skills and Experience:
US citizen / clearable - active security clearance is a plus.
Demonstration of experience in conceptualizing/designing/simulating/ coding/debugging/testing power electronics systems based on integrated electronics hardware and software driven digital control; demonstration of successful application of expertise through product examples, reports, patents, etc.
Demonstration of outward looking activities including, for example, publications, patents, presentations, website, active participation in professional organizations, participation in standards committee, etc.
Demonstration of an awareness of and participation in formal documentation processes as dictated by ISO and other quality standards; also demonstrated ability to recognize when it is permissible to use a lower standard of documentation depending on the needs of the situation.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills -- both oral and written
Demonstration of successful participation in team environment

Desired Skills:
Prior experience in consulting assignments or in small startup companies is a plus; candidates with this background typically understand the style of work in a service organization and have usually been involved in a large number of different types of projects (flexibility, adaptability, and multi-tasking capability)
Direct experience in proposal writing and case management skills (budget/schedule/ deliverables) is a plus

Required Level of Education:
Minimum of a Masters degree from first tier university
Preferred Areas of Academic Concentration:
BS/MS degree in electrical engineering required from highly regarded academic institution; closely related academic training is an acceptable alternative to an electrical engineering degree
