If you still have a phone whose screen isn't scratch-resistant, this could be extremely useful for you. Team of researchers from Eindhoven University of Technology have developed a non-stick self-replenishing plastic coating that can heal itself after being scratched. What they worked up is a coating formulation that separates itself into three layers. The top layer repels water, the middle layer is made up of polymer “stalks,” and the lower layer reservoir is prepared from the coating’s active ingredient. Whenever you scratch the top layer, this active ingredient climbs the stalks and self-heals, returning the non-stick surface to its original form. How wonderful is that?

These self-healing coatings could be a great boon for those of us who use screen-guards to protect their phones and find them extremely tedious to maintain. These Dutch researchers believe that this self-replenishing approach is suitable to recover many surface-related properties and constitutes a major breakthrough in extending the service life-time of functional materials.
