The world of microscopy may not look so small when you start counting the advances it has made recently. Microscopic images of cells are usually used for studying and research, but now two scientists have figured out a way of generating holographic images of cells to observe their behavior.

The researchers, from the EPFL in France, described the process in the#-Link-Snipped-# journal. They chose a cold, low intensity laser to avoid burning up the cells. While the laser rotates around the sample cell, a holographic camera takes snaps from every angle. A computer then merges all the images into 3D. An image takes about one minute to process. Successive images can then be spliced to turn it into a 3D movie.

This method can be used to digitally check the minute details and also real time reaction of cells to medicines or toxins. The researchers are planning to build another version where they could take images instantaneously.
