    Today in the 21st century, energy conservation is the need of the hour. Technologists work day and night to provide the society with good energy saving products. There is a type of power loss which takes place in electronic or electrical devices even when they are put off or are in standby mode.It is called the phantom loss. This loss is around 70% of the total power consumed by the devices. This leads to energy wastage and also adds on to your electricity bills. So the technologists have come up with a SCG3 Smart Strip which is an energy saving power strip.

    [IMG]power strip (also known as an extension leadpower board and by many other variations) is a strip of electrical sockets that attaches to the end of a flexible cable and allows multiple devices to be plugged in . The smart strip energy saving meter has seven outlets in which you can plug in the other devices for supply. It automatically turns off the other devices plugged into it when switched off or in standby mode. For e.g : when you shut down your computer there are other devices like the printers, speakers, keyboard and other electronic devices that are plugged into it and consume power. With the help of SCG3 power strip these external peripherals will be switched off on its own when you shut down the computer.

    Salient Features :

    <ul>
    [*]Provides a safe, uninterrupted power supply
    [*]Auto-switches devices on and off to save energy
    [*]Uses less than one watt of power when fully energized
    [*]Offers an EMI/RFI filter and 15 AMP circuit breaker: There are many a times  stray radio or other electromagnetic signals which cause disturbances in the working of the devices.The SCG3 power strip filters these signals.
    [*]Delivers 1225-joule and 48,000 AMP protection
    [*]All the plug in transformers have a leakage current.Even if the device that they are attached to is turned off, a transformer has a leakage current of 2-4 watts. The Smart Strip stops leakage current.
    [*]No batteries required .
    [*]Right-angle plug keeps cord close to the wall
    [*]Product Dimensions: 15.5 x 5.5 x 2 inches
    </ul>
    WORKING:

    The power strip has blue, white and red sockets in it. The blue socket is the master socket and the white ones are slave sockets. The main device is plugged in the master socket and the other slave devices are plugged in the white sockets.Whenever there is a shift of 10% in the current, the power strip detects that the device is shut down or is in the sleep mode and automatically switches off the white sockets. The red sockets are always on and are switched off only in the case of a power surge.

    Here is an example that cites the typical computer energy savings for offices :
    24 hours x 7 days = 168 hours per week total if left on 24/7.
    9 hours x 5 days = 45 hours per week used, if shut off
    168 hours total – 45 hours used = 123 hours of energy saved.
    123 hours saved ÷ 168 hours total = 73% energy saved.
    Average power used by a workstation while on = 260W/hour (as per Long Island Power Company)
    Average power used while asleep = 30W/hour (While using a Smart Strip)
    Average savings per hour = 230W
    123 hours saved above x 4 weeks x 230 watts = 113KW saved monthly
    113KW x # of computers = total KW per month saved
    Total KW x price/KW = your monthly saving in $

    Thus installing such devices in our day to day lives would definitely contribute to energy conservation and thereby reduce the electricity bills. I have decided to contribute my bit for the cause, will you?
