Scent-O-Mania In TV
Flowers and scents has been a pleasure for mankind since centuries. We have succeeded in making a wide variety of perfumes. So much so that the annual turnover of this perfumes business is in billions. However, the concept of combining perfumes with day to day gadgets would be crazy. Especially, integrating scent with your favorite TV program would be an unimaginable concept. If you think that smell is only limited to perfumes and not gadgets, think again. Researchers at University of California, San Diego for the past two years are busy developing an Odor generating component, collaborating with Samsung, Korea for the same.
The study conducted by UC researchers is for trying to integrate about 10,000 different odors in a matrix of 100X100 liquid filled wires. Whenever the electric current flows through these wires, the liquid filled in them is heated up, releasing scent. However, not every wire can release scent. It is possible only when two current carrying wires are crossing each other. UC, San Diego scientists are trying to reduce the unnecessary circuits in their newly constructed X-Y matrix.

So, if you are watching a sea beach scene, you can experience the sea smell right sitting on your Sofa. Similarly you can smell flowers while watching the valley of flowers scene. However, researchers have insisted on having certain restrictions on this new technology citing reason that, people may not want to have a bad odor in their living room in case of an horrible scene.
Today, the odor technology is a tested technique. UC Scientists has successfully tested the device which they have designed on humans. The team tried it for two TV commercials âPassion by Elizabeth Taylorâ and âLive by Jennifer Lopezâ. The human tester could smell the scent at a distance of 20 centimeter from the test chamber. Hence we can safely say, âIt works!â
There will be a day when almost all gadgets will give signals about their surrounding conditions or if they are âUnwellâ too. While a lot much is to be done in this field, the present fundamental research conducted in this regard has a huge potential to be a commercial success. In future, donât be surprised if someone says, âMy TV stinksâ referring to their non-functional TV!
