Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ finally unveiled with Infinity Display, Bixby Assistant & Android Nougat

Samsung had a bad 2016 with its Note 7 debacle. That was the reason it stayed away from the Mobile World Congress in February. It wanted to avoid the past and look to the future with a new flagship smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ were launched today in New York at a glittering press event. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ offer the best in smartphone experience without losing the basics. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ may have futuristic bezel-less infinite displays but they have stuck with an old school 3.5mm headphone jack. The only difference between the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ is the screen size. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 5.8inch display and the Galaxy S8+ has a 6.2inch display. Both smartphones have Quad HD+ resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Underneath the hood things get a little complicated. Depending upon your region, you may get Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset that houses a 64bit setup of octa-core (2.3GHz quad-core + 1.7GHz quad-core) processors. In markets like India you have to make do with an Exynos chipset that too is a 64-bit octa-core one (2.35GHz quad-core + 1.9GHz quad-core). You however get the same 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage along with a microSD card slot for memory expansion.

When it comes to cameras, Samsung has upped the ante with a 12MP OIS camera with dualpixel and f/1.7 aperture on the rear and an 8MP camera on the front. The fingerprint sensor lies to the side of the rear camera instead of the home button. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is powered by a 3000mAh battery and the Galaxy S8+ is powered by a 3500mAh battery. You may now ask if a mid-range Redmi Note 4 can offer a 4100mAh battery so why not Samsung. We think that Samsung is playing safe considering its past. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ both have IP68 water and dust resistance. They come with ton of sensors like accelerometer, barometer, fingerprint sensor, gyro sensor, geomagnetic sensor, hall sensor, heart rate sensor, proximity sensor, RGB light sensor, iris sensor and pressure sensor.

When it comes to connectivity, it is class leading as well with dual band Wi-Fi MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type C and NFC. The highlight of both the smartphone however is the new Bixby assistant. Just like you would invoke the Google Assistant you can call up Bixby with the click of a button or calling out its name. You can use your Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ apps and services with the help of Bixby. Bixby’s voice control can be used across apps such as Camera, Contacts, Gallery, Messages and Settings. You can use Bixby in other apps as well. Its image recognition capabilities help you sort your photos and help with shopping and getting nearby information. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ will be launched in select markets from April. Pricing information is still awaited.
