Samsung ARTIK Platform Promises To Advance IoT
Samsung Electronics has introduced a brand new platform for the developers who intend to develop for the IoT (Internet of Things). The ARTIK platform comprises of three tiny electronic circuit boards - ARTIK 1, ARTIK 5 and ARTIK 10 along with an ecosystem of software support, tools for developers and onboard encryption for enhanced security. Samsung also announced the availability of 'SmarThings Open Cloud' that will let the developers create and deploy their applications faster for the next generation of devices.
The smallest of the family, ARTIK 1 measures 12mm on each side and hosts a Dual Core CPU operating at 250 MHz and 80 MHz. It also features 1 MB of on board memory chip and 4 MB SPI Flash storage. ARTIK 1 has Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) with Chip Antenna and has a 9-axis motion sensor. The ARTIK 2, which measures 29mmx25mm, has a better hardware with ARM based dual core CPU, 512 MB of LPDDR3 and 4 GB eMMC storage. It houses WiFi/BT/BLE + ZigBee (802.11 b/g/n) and supports modern video codecs. The third board, ARTIK 10 measuring 29x39 mm is the hardware powerhouse. It's got ARM based octa-core processor, 2GB LPDDR3 memory and 16 GB eMMC storage along with WiFi, Bluetooth, BLE, Zigbee/Thread (802.11 b/g/n). The board is capable of supporting 1080p videos at 120 fps.
ARTIK-10 Circuit Board
In their introductory video (see below), Samsung has tried to attract the developer community to the ARTIK platform. Samsung believes that the ARTIK platform will help advance the IoT related development and is inviting applications for the Alpha Program till May 31st. Those interested in applying may head over to the official website linked in the source below.
Developing for connected devices is going to be very exciting in the coming months and it's an emerging technology. With ARTIK, Samsung's entered into the field with players like Qualcomm and Intel. Do let us know your views and opinions on IoT and how do you expect it to change the world in coming years.
