Samsung Announces Gear S With Curved AMOLED Display, Tizen OS and 3G Connectivity

While other smartwatch manufactures are opting for Android Wear, Samsung is sticking with its home grown Tizen based wearable platform with the Gear S. The Gear S is quite different from the Gear range because it comes with 3G connectivity. This means even when you are out of the Bluetooth range of your smartphone you can still make calls, send texts and receive updates from apps installed on the Gear S. The Gear S hooks up to your smartphone with help of Bluetooth 4.1. If you do not want to use smartphone’s battery sapping Bluetooth or data connection of your Gear S or smartphone you have the option of choosing Wi-Fi connectivity for accessing internet. As the Gear S has GPS and GLONASS navigation sensors, Samsung took help from Nokia’s HERE Maps service to include turn-by-turn navigation on the Gear S.

Samsung has used its curved display expertise to give the Gear S a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display with 360 x 480 pixels resolution that fits perfectly on your wrist. To make calls or answer texts you can use Samsung’s S Voice or if you do not want to look like a dork in the public (while talking to your smartwatch) you can use the on-screen keyboard. Fitness enthusiasts will be glad to find a heart rate sensor on the smartwatch. We were astonished to find a UV sensor and a barometer on the Gear S along with accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and ambient light sensors. Other technical specifications include 1GHz dual-core processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory. Just like most Samsung smartwatches, the Gear S is IP67 certified dust and water resistant. Samsung claims that the 300mAh battery can last for two days but we are not so sure about that considering the abundance of connectivity options. The SIM slot inside the Gear S seems like a good idea at first, you get to make calls without phone and even when your phone has run out of charge you have got a spare one. In the long run it would be quite expensive as you have to pay for the voice calls and data consumption separately.
