Samsung Announces Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge At IFA 2014
Samsung kick started the proceedings at the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) by announcing the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge. Both of these handsets are premium handsets that pack in a punch in terms of looks and tech specs. While the prices of these Android KitKat powered handsets are still unknown, we can expect them to land in stores of selected countries this fall. We shall take an in-depth look at both these handsets starting with the latest Galaxy Note.
Samsung Galaxy Note 4
At first it might seem that Samsung has repeated its done-to-death design with the Galaxy Note 4, by sticking with the faux leather finish on the back and rectangular face but if you notice more carefully you can find aluminium on the sides and the folks from #-Link-Snipped-# have confirmed that this is real aluminium and not just metallic paint over plastic. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has the same 5.7-inch AMOLED like <a href="https://www.crazyengineers.com/threads/samsung-galaxy-note-3-price-in-india.70500">Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Price In India</a> but bumps the resolution to Quad HD (2560x1440) resolution. The processing firepower is provided by a 2.7 GHz Quad-Core or 1.9 GHz Octa-Core (1.9GHz Quad + 1.3GHz Quad-Core) processor depending on your country and carrier.
Samsung proudly states that the 16MP rear camera has a Smart Optical Image Stabiliser that counter balances shaky handling and extends the exposure time in dark surroundings to give you stable and better low light images. Remember Ellen’s #-Link-Snipped-# (shot by Samsung Galaxy Note 3) where she said that if Bradley Cooper’s arm was longer, some stars might not have been cropped out of the frame? Well, that problem has been solved with the Note 4 as the company has added a 3.7MP sensor with f1.9 wide angle lens that offers 90 degree shooting angle and goes up to 120 degrees to accommodate more people in the frame.
The S Pen now offers a more realistic writing experience with a new brush effect that emulates writing on a paper with a fountain pen. The voice recorder on the Galaxy Note 4 can tag different voices in a conversation and isolate them during playback. As with most high-end smartphones, it comes with a fingerprint sensor and for the first time a UV sensor. Other tech specs include a 3 GB RAM, 32 GB internal memory expandable with microSD cards of up to 64GB and a 3220mAh battery with fast charging. Sensor list includes Gesture, Accelerometer, Geo-magnetic, Gyroscope, RGB,IR-LED, Proximity, Barometer, Hall Sensor, Finger Scanner, UV, Heart Rate Monitoring and SpO2. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi MIMO, GPS, GLONASS, Bluetooth 4.1, IR, USB 2.0 and MHL 3.0. The Galaxy Note 4 will be available in Charcoal Black, Frost White, Bronze Gold and Blossom Pink in markets starting from next month.
Samsung Galaxy Note Edge
It’s hard to miss isn’t it? The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is the first smartphone from the company to embrace the bent display, in a good way. Unlike other curved smartphones, which have concave displays either horizontally or vertically bent, the Galaxy Note Edge display extends to the right hand side of the screen giving extra area. So, how is this area used? For starters while viewing a video on your Galaxy Edge the playback controls do not overlap the video instead they stay on the edge. The edge also displays notifications from selected apps. The edge screen which has 160 rows of pixels has shortcuts to your favourite apps, which means you can invoke them without leaving the current app or returning to menu. At night the display shows the time without activating the display which means it’s a cool bedside clock. The only hindrance of this cutting edge technology is that developers need to use the phone’s SDK to customise regular apps and we do not think that the community will be interested in developing apps just for one phone.
The Galaxy Note has a 5.6 inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED (2560 x 1440 + 160) display and runs Android KitKat with the help of a 2.7 GHz Quad-Core processor and 3GB RAM. While camera, memory, sensor and connectivity specs remain the same as the Galaxy Note 4 the battery is of smaller capacity (3000mAh). The Galaxy Note Edge will be available in Charcoal Black, Frost White colour variants later this year at an as-of-yet undisclosed price.
