RoMeLa labs at Virginia Tech are presently working on the development of the SAFFiR [Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot], which shall carry and handle fire extinguishers, autonomously move within the ship, hurl propelled extinguishing agent technology (PEAT) canisters, communicate with humans, and discover fires. Except for the legs, none of the robot's parts have been readied as of now.

The SAFFiR's legs are a extremely packed with all the motors, pulleys, wire harnesses, and controllers that permit the robot to walk, even while the ship dances through the waves. The mechanical posture and the overall balance have been taken care of, by employing maxon precision motors' EPOS controls. Six motors were fitted in each leg for the necessary six degrees of freedom, i.e., twelve motors were employed in the legs itself. The motors constituted for the maximum mass of the robot, so mostly 100W motors were used to keep the weight in check. The joints needed to move faster that the rest of the parts, so they had 200W motors ornamenting them.
