Russia to become independent of Microsoft Windows

When the whole world is dependent on the US Giant Microsoft, the Russian State is taking a different route altogether. It plans to build a rival to Windows to become independent of Microsoft and to enhance it's computer management and security.

Moscow will receive 150 million rubles (3.5 million euros, $4.9 million) to develop a national software system based on the Linux operating system.

"The devil is in the details," said Ponomarev, a computer expert adding those details would be hashed out during a December meeting headed by vice-prime minister Sergei Ivanov.

P.S: Russia had set to achieve a similar feat in the 1980s when the Russian military went about to create the GLONASS satellite navigation system, to compete with the US Global Positioning System (GPS) and competition in the future from Europe's Galileo.
