Toll booth on Mumbai's famous Bandra Worli Sea Link is now equipped with RFID aka Radio Frequency Identification. Daily commuters can now buy RFID stickers for Rs. 100 and stick them on the windshield. The pre-paid system allows users to top-up their accounts by paying fixed amounts. As soon as the vehicle arrives at the toll booth, the RFID scanners scan the sticker and deduct the amount from the respective account. Users will get a confirmation and status of their account on their mobile phones via SMS. Here's how the RFID sticker looks -

The RFID toll booth at the Sea Link isn't India's first. The title is claimed by the toll booth at Chandimandir near Panchkula on Chandigadh - Delhi highway. Yet, adoption of RFID by the toll booths at sea link is a major step in automating the toll collection process. India needs it badly. Apart from its major technological advantage, the adoption of RFID will also bring in the much awaited transparency in the whole toll collection business. Maharashtra has recently seen revolts against the illegal toll collection on roads.
One major problem this technology solves is that it will give the commuters a big relief from long queues on busiest roads. Maharashtra State Roads Development Corporation aka MSRDC is already planning to setup electronic display system to display total amount of toll collected at the booth since it was installed.
We envision our future where every toll booth in India uses RFID system for toll collection. Do let us know your thoughts.
