Betabrand, a California based clothing brand and security firm Norton have collaborated to produce world’s first RFID-blocking jeans and blazer. The reason for manufacturing these clothes is to protect its wearers from identity and credit card theft. Modern contact-less credit cards and passports carry RFID (Radio-frequency identification) chips and it is very easy for a hacker to steal your credit card number, expiration date and CCV number by buying an off-the-shelf credit card reader and passing it over your pocket or wallet. Recent reports suggest that these attackers have tweaked their tools that enable them to steal RFID information from a distance of 20 to 30 inches. The clothes tailored by Betabrand with technical support from Norton are equipped with pockets that are lined with a silver-based material to block signals from RFID scanning devices.
Betabrand has launched The READY Active Jeans and Work-It Blazer as a part of its Think-Tank initiative which works the same way as Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Interested users pre-order the product at attractive discounts and if it manages to cross the amount threshold set by the company, it becomes a part of its product range and you are smart enough to figure out what happens to a product that does not reach the goal.
