I've always wondered why most of the buses out there don't have an on-board restroom? One obvious reason could be that it adds to the overall length of the bus. My limited automobile design knowledge stops me from thinking what are the design limitations and constraints this would put. But I'm sure everyone would definitely agree that this would indeed make the travel a lot more confortable.

Design change.. umm no shouldn't lead to much of the design change. However, I can think of following reasons,
- Buses would require to carry additional weight for on board water tank for restrooms (as possibility of vacuum cleaning restroom would be costlier game)
- It would add up to maintenance and sweeping tasks.
- Space constraint would not allow it for non-luxury buses (In luxury buses trend is changing and I have seen restrooms in few buses)
It's good idea to have restroom on long route buses (at least >4 hours of journey), now it is possible with dry restrooms which are being used in some of the trains also.
But, thanks to our regular Indian roads with jerks and pits that a normal restrooms is quite not be feasible. It needs to be re-engineered.
For longer bus journeys, they should obviously be providing a restroom. It will just increase people's use of public transport. I guess in India at least, buses were designed to be used for short local journeys. And you don't really need a loo for a small tour. Only recently, we have seen the upsurge in the use of buses for journeys that last 14-16 hours
As far as design is concerned, I don't think buses would offer limitations. It is only lack of planning that makes the necessities go unnoticed.
restrooms on buses may become too cumbersome as far as hygiene is concerned.
ever seen the design of the toilet bowl of the intercity trains ?
well the bowls open out straight out on to the rails, which means that the waste which is put in to it, falls straight onto the rails.
now if buses were to have a similar design of toilet bowls, then imagine the stateof the roads.
one may think of an alternate solution, that is that in the case of buses the human waste may be stored in tanks or so, which in turn may be cleaned periodically.
but then again what if it is not cleaned due to mismanagement ?
I agree to both AbraKaDabra and Zaveri but there is a need for restrooms in buses because it is one of the most usable mode of transport. especially for long time consuming journeys.I dont think it was space that matters but it is mainly due to management of waste. As Zaveri said. management of waste is a uphill task.I prefer a storage based restroom that should be regularly cleaned where once the tank was full it should be replaced by a new one and in the mean time the old tank sent for cleaning. But advanced technology is in need for hygiene maintenance.
I have a small sketch for restrooms in bus.But i dont know how to upload it.Pleasse help me.I tried "insert image" But It says "Enter the url".Help me😭

Use upload file option (middle button) and then select thumbnail/full size as you want😀
its a rough sketch.it shows the positioning of the water storage tank in a inclined position so that water from tank is used effectively.its just a small idea.please give your valuable suggestions to take this sketch to next model.
You might have seen all the latest Volvo buses having their luggage storage area in the exact place where you have your Collector tank
Don't you think this can be an hinderance to the commuters Also won't the commuter have a irritated feeling to see their lovely baggage along with their fecal collections 😕

No, its not that bad. Its just the overhead that's not allowing these to go popular.
Check out Volvo in Banglore for more pics.
Yes i agree to conquerer and crazyboy. But I think that this setup wont bother passengers. since this collector tank is completely seperated from luggage .I posted only the side view.soon I will post the other views friends.thanks for your reply.

Do post on mate I am waiting for the looks But I am not a civil guy so its going to be hard to understand those image Hope I can
Hi Mr.Conquerer I am a final year student of automobile engineering and my sketch would be simple to understand as i am not a civil engineer bro.sketch will be posted soon
Cost is not a major concern for long distance Bus journeys.
Aircraft style active vacuum toilets using less water should be condidered. They also need much less space. They can be emptied more often as the bus is on the ground all the time, so less water and waste tank space needed.
<a href="https://science.howstuffworks.com/transport/flight/modern/question314.htm" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">How does the toilet in a commercial airliner work? | HowStuffWorks</a>
Can not be compared to Aircraft.
Take an example, Toilet size of Toilets in Aircraft is not even 1% of the size of the Air craft so space required for Washroom and waste is not too much comparatively. Price of Air travel is way too much compare to Bus travel. Also ration of size / No of travelers in bus is way too high in the buses compare to Air craft
Another problem is cost of operation, comparatively cost of road travel is kept very less that is obtained by removing all such items (that's why they charge you less compare to Aircraft).
Also, we need to keep one thing in mind that this is possible that's why luxury (Again talking about price) buses have that facility.
Please be patient with this stupid idea.I always wonder about the structures, buildings and science behind it But I want to know how much water get wasted in a restrooms due to leakage or improper usage. So this model poped out of my mind.It may exist in present but I dont have an idea about it.following Pictures speak about my project. This model mainly rely on sensor and an electronic control module to control whole process.I want all the CEans review on my idea(both positive and negative reviews are welcomed) and any suggestions on which sensor i would use for better outcome of the project.I will tag experts to pay a small visit on my project
Working:When a person stands over the ramp the sensor sense the weight and if it exceeds 10kg it will automatically flush the restroom after 2minutes for 5seconds.Additionally it also senses any leakage in pipeline.
I want the following CEans to suggest their views

I have seen restrooms already applied in some of the buses over long journey. But that is not feasible to be installed in ALL the buses. A lot of factors need to be considered like cost of travel, storage, size. Apart from that, a bus has a dimension of about 10feet in width. If you want to build a restroon within, which would be atleast 5x5, it will compromise alot of other features of the bus.
