Reliance 4G Expected In Mid 2013, Wants You To Buy Mi-Fi First

Reliance acquired Infotel to launch 4G services in India. While we expected Reliance to be the first mover in the game, Airtel beat them by launching the networks in Koltata followed by Bangalore and Pune. The latest development is quite interesting. Reliance is expected to roll out their 4G services in Mumbai & Delhi sometime around mid 2013. They've already formed partnerships with Samsung, Microsoft, IBM and Ericsson to make sure that the launch is smooth and well in time.

Reliance understands that the adoption of 4G is hindered by the non-availability of the 4G capable hardware which is necessary for accessing 4G services. To address this problem, Reliance is in the process of launching 'MiFi' devices [MiFi is 'My Wi-Fi']. These devices will convert 4G signals into your regular Wi-Fi local network. Since almost every gadget is equipped with Wi-Fi, Reliance expects that the MiFi gadgets will fuel the growth and penetration of 4G services.

We expect other telecom operators to make an entry to the 4G domain as soon as possible. We'd also love to expect a price-war for 4G data plans. Future is interesting!
