Qualcomm's ideas to provide 1000x more capacity in networks

Paul Jacob, chairman & CEO of Qualcomm, in their IQ event in Moscow today highlighted the concepts to greatly improve capacity as reported by #-Link-Snipped-#.

Three main points worth discussing on:

Inside out approach
Network is based on a inside to out approach using small cells, where data only leaves your current domain if destination is outside. Like the concept of routers, when you place a call to a colleague in the same building, it does not have to travel all the way to the core network and back. It will be directly routed locally in the same cell. This saves back haul bandwidth tremendously and reduce switching load.

Broadcast technologies
Dedicated multicast QoS for streaming of IPTV, real time data, live matches or events for mobile networks. Mobile TV does exist, but in the form of point-to-point connections. They are not bandwidth efficient if many users request for the content and cause load, thus its not popular for existing operators to deploy.

Hence specifications have been developed for point-to-multipoint multimedia broadcast and multicast services (see Wiki: Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service). Users can watch their favourite matches on their phones without latency, and operators save on bandwidth provision. Win-win situation 😀

Qualcomm & Ericsson have demonstrated eMBMS over LTE last year, so its something to look forward to once LTE fully commercializes by next year!

Proximal Communications
This is more based on P2P, where you communicate directly with your surroundings, such as sharing data with friends in office or schools. The implications of proximal communications is huge, plus it brings us closer to obtaining Ambient Intelligence. When you have an convergence of metro wide communications with personal communications, your devices can pretty much talk to anything. There has been a lot of talk in the years, but lack of implementation or framework. This is where the #-Link-Snipped-#. Its an open source software framework that allows you control devices, stream and broadcast data using dynamic proximal networks.

The Open source MagicPlay project is based on this framework (OpenSource AirPlay : MagicPlay.), where you can stream music from any device to a myraid of devices. Hopefully more projects will sprout out to take advantage of AllJoyn. Further enhancements are being made to this framework, so huge potential here for embedded developers!

Its worth noting that all these concepts are not new. However, having Qualcomm to lead the development is key as they are the prime movers for any communications evolution. They have pretty much positioned themselves nicely in the market 😉

Okay, my question might look very n00b - but do you think this will help any way in 5G technology to be ready by the end of the decade?

Very likely 😀 Qualcomm (and other semicon manufacturers) work very closely with phone manufacturers and telco vendors to research and test out next gen communications. We are talking about a paradigm shift for communications; having PANs & M2M more prevalent.

Whatever benefits 5G brings to end users, mobile operators also benefit in terms of reduced capex & opex in running the network.
