Projector That Works In Daylight

German scientists and researchers from Fraunhofer Society have developed a tiny projector that can work even in Sun-lit room and produce image/video quality comparable to that of HDTVs. The prototype of this projector will be showcased at Tokyo’s Nano Tech 2011 trade show next month. The 3mm thin device can be used in mobile phones and portable devices and also used for larger displays in stadiums. The device comprises of about 250 micro-lenses each containing the project image's part created by underlying microoptic system. When projected they together produce a large high quality image.

The USP of this projector is that it does not require larger lenses for brighter or bigger images. For bigger images one needs to increase the area size of the projector. However, it'd always remain super slim. The developers of this technology said that they were inspired by a device called fly’s eye condenser used to smooth out beams of light from LEDs. The researchers had to develop aspheric lenses of specific shape to develop this projector.

The team is already working on larger projectors for advertisements and illumination. They are seeking industrial partners to commercialize the project. However, according to researchers it'd take at least 5 more years before the devices will be available for commercial use.
