Prof. Michael Graetzel's Photosnythetic Solar Cell Wins Millennium Technology Prize

Established in 2004, the Millennium Technology Prize is already one of the most visible prices in its field. Awarded by the Academy of Finland Technology, a joint foundation of the State and Industry of Finland, he wants a price of applied science, and rewards innovations that contribute directly to well-being. In awarding its highest award to Michael Graetzel, the jury demonstrated its confidence in the future solar cells to dye. Professor Gratzel received €800,000 (£660,000) prize at a ceremony in Helsinki.

[IMG]The photo-cell uses the same techniques as plants to convert sunlight into energy. The photo-cells (called Gratzel Cells) use nanocrystal films to extract power from sunlight. These particles are so small that they do not scatter light and collect solar energy from various angles. The cost of Gratzel cells is much lower and the technology can be used to manufacture electricity generating windows, mobile solar panels and other devices.
