Piezo Devices Offing Next Generation User Interface

The Kyoto based company, #-Link-Snipped-#has developed two new user interface devices that were using piezoelectric films as sensors to detect user inputs. With an increased usage of Smartphones, Tablets, high-tech computers and gaming devices, we were missing a user interface for this generation. This Kyoto based company gave a try to fill this void by releasing these two new devices "Leaf Grip Remote Controller and Touch pressure pad ( a touch panel with pressure detection)".

Leaf Grip Remote Controller

The base for these two devices is just simply the piezoelectric film but with pyroelectric effect eliminated. This pyroelectric effect which is the "generation of temporary voltage when a material is heated or cooled" makes it difficult to distinguish the voltage generated by the twist and turn from the temperature change in the piezoelectric films.  By joining hands with Kansai University and Mitsui Chemicals Inc., Murata developed this new piezoelectric film with pyroelectric effect eliminated.

Usage of Leaf Grip Remote Controller

While having a look at the Leaf Grip Remote Controller, the new design which allows a user to interface with other devices by twisting and bending of piezoelectric film was soo cool and futuristic. Furthermore, "it uses pigments to discharge electrons when it receives light and is assembled with a photovoltaic cell that converts light into electricity to provide it with a battery-less feature.", explains #-Link-Snipped-#.

Touch pressure pad

The "Touch pressure pad" is just another touch pad similar to the touch pads now used in the Notebooks and other similar devices with some additional capabilities. Murata Manufacturing Co. was planned to exhibit these devices and provide a demonstration at CEATEC JAPAN 2011 to be held from October 4th to 8th. Also the number of patents pending for Murata that were related to materials and applied devices is approximately 30 and this increased the chance for more similar products from this company.
