OBSTACLE DETECTION AND GUIDANCE STICK FOR BLIND

Project Abstract / Summary : In order to help the visually challenged people, a study that helps those people to walk more confidently is proposed. The study hypothesizes a smart walking stick that alerts visually-impaired people over obstacles, pit and water in front could help them in walking with less accident. It consists of a simple walking stick equipped with sensors to give information about the environment. The sound navigation & Ranging (SONAR) technology is the most commonly used technology for range sensing. This ultrasonic sensor is one of the cost effective way to detect obstacles and to guide the blind. The ultrasonic sensor transmits electromagnetic pulses and receives echo reflected by the obstacle. The distance is calculated by the duration between transmitted and received pulses. Here we propose HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor & ATMEGA 328 Microcontroller for controlling operation. The microcontroller will calculate the distance between the sensor and obstacle, and drives alarm or voice module to alert the blind people. The coding for microcontroller will be developed in C.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : OUR MAIN THEME TO WORK ON THIS TOPIC IS TO HELP THE POOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED PEOPLE IN AN EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT WAY. FOR THAT WE INITIALLY STARTED TO DESIGN THIS LOW COST BLIND STICK FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED WHO ARE ALL POOR ALSO. THE FUTURE SCOPE INVOLVES TO BE REACHED TO THE ENTIRE WORLD.

Project Highlights : IT IS DUE TO THE LOW COST BUDGET AND EFFICIENT DETECTION OF OBSTACLES THAT BE THE ALTERNATE TO THE NORMAL STICKS. THIS PROJECT WILL BE EXPOSED TO THE PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD AND IS VERY USER FRIENDLY. THIS BE THE GOOD COMPANION FOR THE BLIND PEOPLE WHO ARE BELOW POVERTY LINE.
