Japan's NTT Docomo has demonstrated a new video cmpression standard, called HEVC (H.265). This new standard is supposed to be the next generation of video coding after H.264/MPEG-4 AVC which is currently widely being used all over the world. HEVC H.265, the company says, can double the data compression ratio.

HEVC was approved by the ITU & ISO on January 25, 2013. The video below demonstrates the codec in action with the current standard video on the left and the latest one on the right. The difference in the video quality is clearly visible.

The HEVC standard was first proposed in 2007 and it is one of the most ideal video compression for video to be played on mobile devices. Docomo will now actively incorporate HEVC in its video services.

The codec software to play the video on PC has been developed by Docomo and it renders video 4x larger than Full HD at 60fps in real time. Docomo thinks that 60fps video with 4K display size like this is world's first; with data volume just about 10 Mbps.

Docomo is expected to start licensing the HEVC codec software for full HD smartphones and tablets in March.
