6 years ago, Nissan developed the Scratch Guard Coat, a paint that was intended for use with cars. It could easily heal painted surfaces that get scratches on them. But now Nissan has announced to license the very same technology for use with mobile devices. In addition, Nissan has also announced that it would produce world’s first self-healing iPhone case that uses the self-healing property of the paint.

Initially, the self-healing paint was developed by Nissan in collaboration with the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc. for use with automotive products. Currently cars that surprise us with this feature include Nissan Murano, 370Z and X-Trail along with some Infiniti models.  The self-healing paint is highly resilient as it is of made of a material called polyrotaxane having a chemical structure that reacts with sunlight and transforms itself to its original shape. Test results reported that small scratches get repaired in an hour while deep scratches took up to a week. Nevertheless, this paint provides a high gloss- high grip surface that can get a better hold to human hands while using the iPhone.

Nissan has especially engineered some automotive technologies in developing the self-healing iPhone case. It includes the use of ABS plastic which is highly rigid, robust and fits better to the phone.

The initial batch of cases are already under testing and if testing goes good, Nissan plans to release the cases in to the market very soon.
