Next generation Hybrid Vehicle

Project Abstract / Summary : The consumption for fuel in Automotive is drastically increasing due to population growth. The application of a thermoelectric system which recovers waste heat to generate power can be integrated in three different ways.

A thermoelectric system is semiconductor based module which converts temperature gradient into electricity by movement of electrons.

A Lot of heat is produced at cathode of a cell for a hydrogen based fuel cell car due to recombination of oxygen and hydrogen molecules. This fuel cell can be modified by integrating thermoelectric system in cell to recover the waste heat produced and generate electricity. This thermoelectric system can also be integrated in the car radiators which release heat in the environment. This module can also be integrated in the exit of high temperature flue gas pathway which lowers gas temperature and also generate power. This novel technology will lead to development of next generation hybrid cars which will have an electric motor working in conjunction with the conventional IC engine or the future fuel cell engine. It can also be for air conditioning, lights, and other electrical devices. This novel technology is environment friendly, which can limit the fuel consumption drastically and save a lot of money. We have also made a small working model of a car based on this technology.

This innovation will lead to cutting down in the prices of the conventional fuels drastically and benefit the common man. This novel technology will lead to development of next generation hybrid cars which will have an electric motor working in conjunction with the conventional IC engine or the future fuel cell engine. It can also be for air conditioning, lights, and other electrical devices

I with my team have been working on this Research project since 17 months under the guidance of Professor Seema Kapoor. We have done all the experimental research work in our labs. We have created the same conditions of temperature and pressure in batch reactor which are found in the Radiator and Exhaust of a Maruti 800 automobile. We have also done a detailed analysis of a hydrogen fuel cell and modified it. We have got the detailed designs and result as well.

This novel technology is environment friendly, which can limit the fuel consumption drastically and save a lot of money.The high temperature flue gases would now be emitted at a lower temperature. It would also lower the carbon emissions in the atmosphere.This way of harnessing energy will also reduce the carbon emmision in the atmosphere and will be highly beneficial to the environment.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : The price of conventional fuels is drastically increasing due to depletion of the conventional fuel sources and increasing demand. Therefore a way to lower the consumption of fuel has to be found out.Automobiles emit a lot of carbon in the atmosphere.The exit flue gases are also at a high temperature when released in the atmosphere About 6000kJ of heat energy per hour is released in the environment through one car. Their exists almost 15-20 lakhs automobiles in metropolitan cities which release almost 33lakhs kW of energy in atmosphere per hour. Now what if we can convert this energy into electricity??? On an average 140MW of power can be generated only by car traffic of one city. You can now imagine the amount of energy that can be generated at country level and throughout the globe.This way of harnessing energy will also reduce the carbon emission in the atmosphere and will be highly beneficial to the environment.
Being a Chemical Engineer We thought, A sustainable solution to reduce the heat and carbon dioxide emitted and and make the fuel prices cheap has to be found out.
