New Large Hadron Collider, Called 'Future Circular Collider' Will Be 7x More Powerful

Engineers at CERN are planning for a new Large Hadron Collider, called "Future Circular Collider' aka FCC. The FCC will be 7x more powerful than the current one and have a circumference of about 80 to 100 kilometers (current is about 27 km). The team of scientists and engineers at CERN believes that the planning for the next experiment should begin right now because the current LHC took about 25 years to go from the concept to operational state and Future Circular Collider make take even more, given the size and capacity the team is targeting.

The current LHC was commissioned in 2008 and is currently undergoing an 18-month long down-time for maintenance. It continues to be one of the most complex machines ever built and world's biggest scientific experiment so far. The LHC is estimated to have a life-span of about 20 years and has already helped discover the famous 'God Particle' by crashing ultra high-speed (nearing the speed of light) proton beams head-on.

The planning team, comprising of about 300 scientists & engineers will embark on the feasibility study in the next few days and explore the possibility of using existing infrastructure for the new collider. It's likely that the new large hadron collider will be located at the same place as LHC, and may use the same tunnel as LHC.

Another study, to examine possibility of developing a Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) will be conducted in parallel. The CLIC is expected to be a liner 80km machine. The planning team will do a comparative study of both designs and produce conceptual designs by 2020. The winner of the two will become a successor to the LHC.

The new machine will help pushing our current knowledge about the universe to newer heights. CERN officials say they can't offer an estimate of the costs this new mega-engineering project will take. We bet it'll be an interesting engineering project we might see in our lifetimes.
