Neul Uses White spectrum - World’s First Production White Space Radio System

A UK based company NEUL has announced the launch of its services NeulNET which will use a white spectrum; a topic little bit different from 2G and 3G. The wireless technology would be used to connect devices through a spectrum which is unused in TV band. Neul proposes the use of a 150MHz spectrum which is free for use unlike the current 2G and 3G spectrums and other Wi-Fi technologies which not only connects devices like mobile phone but also gadgets like TV, refrigerators and other day to day appliances. It is seen that some of the channels are left unused in a TV spectrum. Identifying and using that band without affecting normal functioning of TV channels is the concept behind this white spectrum.

The system consists of a portable battery powered terminal and requires activating a base station unit. The geographical position of which is reported to a centralized database. The database then sends signal for performing operation to that base station.  The most important selling point of this technology is that it is free for use. A 3G service uses a spectrum of 30MHz and cost paid for that was around £22 billion in the year 2000. Another feature of NeulNET would be its download speed. Once the base stations are set up, the download speed near base stations would be 16 Mbps while it would be reduced to 10 Kbps at a radius of 10 Km from it. So it would mean an almost good connectivity for a very good range of distance. The initial plans are to cover whole of UK with 6000 stations. The stations to be established are low power consuming ones this would also mean that they would be able to function smoothly for years together with battery power.
The new radio technology is designed for not using any SIM cards or any such medium considering the fact that the data transfer if machine to machine or M2M as the technology is called now a day. The existing 2G and 3G technologies are expensive even their modems consume too much power. The M2M solution by Neul is an excellent replacement for these. M2M technology used in white spectrum would utilize minimum power and the cheapness of new radio technology has a nullifying effect over crucial negative points in 2G and 3G. It is expected to bring a new revolution in the field of connectivity.
