I am currently a B.eng student studying mechanical engineering and have been kicked out of school for my marks (lot of outside problems in the year that may/not have caused such poor performance). Not sure if I want to return to studying at university since they want me to go to a college to study related subjects, and even then I am not guaranteed readmission. I have been thinking about apprenticing for a trade also. Just looking for some general advice, if I were to become an engineer I would be looking for hands on type jobs I could never work in an office. Hopefully there are any mechanical engineers who could give me more insight about their jobs, and potential possibilities in the field. I will be living in Canada if that is of any concern. Thanks a lot, I hope I get lots of responces.

There is a wonderful story - which is, I fear, apocryphal - told of Sir Winston Churchill's doing just that in a return to Harrow School, from which he had graduated in 1893.

As the story goes, Churchill was well into his 80s - frail, wizened, and stooped - when he attended the annual opening of school. At the event's conclusion, Churchill was asked if he'd say a few words. He rose, paused, and then spoke. "Never give up. Never. Never. Never. Never. Never." He then sat down, to thunderous applause.

Sorry to hear you've had some difficulty getting adjusted to school, it can be tough when a lot is going on. My mother died while I was in school & that time was rough for me & greatly affected my studies. Where in Canada will you be? Your local job market climate should play a role in your decision. Knowledge and college experience are a wonderful thing and I would never talk anyone out of it. Having said that, trade work is just as important and rewarding. In some areas (US & Europe) trade skills are getting scarce and in high demand due to lack of qualified people. I'd suggest combining the two for a great career opportunity. Continue studying with a focus on business or engineering. What type of trade interests you? Take some trade classes as well to gain experience. The combination of the two can lead you to a managerial role career in trades. Supervisor or foreman in construction management, facilities management, aviation mechanics, project management, manufacture or plant engineering, civil engineers can be out in the field as inspectors, HVAC & vertical transportation (design systems and oversee installation or repair). These are just a few! A summer or part time job in a trade of interest will also give you some skills as well as money for continued education. Some engineering and trade firms may even have intern programs. There are also schools that specialize in training in trades as well. Talk to several engineers and trade profession people to get the inside scoop on the careers. I'd be happy to offer additional advice if I can, let me know! Whatever you decide, make sure to do what you find fulfilling & give it 100%. Sounds like you are exploring and carefully considering all of your options which is great. You never know where your career interests will take you. I started out studying microbiology. I did construction and maintenance work to help cover costs and now manage a group of engineers. I enjoy working on my car and motorcycles as a hobby to continue getting my hands dirty and tinkering. =)

My dad died last year, i'm sure it has a little to do with my situation whether I can believe it or not. Southern Ontario is my domain, trades wise I could go do anything plumbing, hvac, welding, tool and die, electrical, mechanic, w/e I love trades just as much as I love the engineering field and the two combined is probably what I'm more looking for anyhow. Worked with a couple of general contractors this summer as well, opened my eyes to a lot of things and i really enjoyed the work. I guess I should just keep soldiering on through school whether I like it or not lol, I am just in a position where I am sick of paying all this cash and am worried about getting back into university and blowing it again. Reading that makes me feel like I should suck it up cause I know better, thanks for your answer I feel like I can really identify with your interests. If your like working on motorcycles dirtbikes are the most rewarding, I'll do everything to mine because once you take it to a shop you just dont know what they do to it lol.

Sounds like you are on the right track! If you do go on to work in an engineering aspect of trades be sure to look into AFE's CPE professional certification, Certified Plant Engineer.
