MS Office For iOS & Android - Is Real!

Finally, we've some news that makes us really happy! TheVerge is Exclusive: Microsoft Office for iPhone, iPad, and Android revealed - The Verge that Microsoft's releasing MS Office for iOS & Android platforms and the release date would be sometime around Q1, 2013. What this means is that we'll now be able to put our iPhone, iPad and Android devices to some 'real' business use. Microsoft so long has kept their lips locked about plans to release the world's most popular productivity software on the most popular mobile operating systems. Several trustworthy sources have confirmed to TheVerge that the apps are already under testing and are just few weeks away from being unveiled to the world.

The Office Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote etc.) would be released as apps for iOS and Android so that users will be able to view and edit their documents on the move. It's no brainer that the users will require Microsoft Account (Live account) to access these apps and your documents will most likely be stored on and synced with Microsoft Skydrive. It's also being learned that the document editing facility will be enabled with the Microsoft 365 subscription, while viewing facility will be offered out of the box.

iOS users will be permitted to use Microsoft 365 subscription within the app or allow volume licensing for the organisations. The organisations will then be able to distribute codes among their employees. The iOS versions are expected to make an entry in the Q1, while the Android versions may get released towards the end of Q2, 2013.

We think MS Office for iOS and Android is a great news. While document viewing functionality has been available for quite some time now on both these platforms; so we won't be getting anything entirely new. We'd expect some innovation on the UX part though. At least for us, the mobile apps aren't replacing our desktop software anytime soon. It'd be really interesting to see the pricing of these Apps. We'd expect Microsoft to release them for free.
