In 2014, the Firefox producer Mozilla had introduced a separate trial version of a browser that had support for web based virtual reality (VR) apps. Not many people know about this development because of the launch in an experimental browser, but now Mozilla has introduced the same in Mozilla Nightly, a well-known developer build by Mozilla. This virtual reality can be experienced by using the Oculus Rift headphones just like in the trial version released last year. The same is available for Developer Edition (alpha) build too.
The problem with the previous build was that it didnât had the latest updates with it. Mozilla has assured that now continuous Firefox improvements will go hand in hand with the VR abilities of Nightly and other enabled builds. Even though Nightly will have the fundamental webVR pre-installed, but in order to experience it via Oculus Rift, the users will have to manually download and install an add-on. The add-on will contain an SDK library which Firefox needs to access in order to work with Oculus Rift. Firefox speculated that maybe in the future browsers, the SDK library might come pre-installed too.
Mozilla said that their work is still incomplete and hence is not available with Beta and Release builds. They are still making changes to VR interfaces and are working with the required pieces so that they can provide support for the necessary platforms. Mozilla said that they will ensure that news about the release of VR in Beta builds will reach everyone before they actually do so. Also, they said that webVR doesnât work with Electrolysis - MozillaWiki, so in order to use it, a non-e10 window must be used.
Mozilla said that they hope to bring the support for Linux, Firefox for Android and Cardboard devices so that VR becomes a possibility for mobile devices too. Their #-Link-Snipped-# are available too for those who are interested in web development. Considering all this, it is hard to deny that Mozillaâs efforts to become more than just a browser is extremely credible.
