Since the Windows 8 customer preview has been released, everyone is trying to develop app for their metro platform. Officially, the windows app store will open for business in the end of the year, but some people want to make their mark before that! Mozilla has been working on developing a browser for Windows 8 metro platform and if the released screenshots are to be believed they are working quite fine.

Brian R. Bondy, Firefox platform engineer, said in a #-Link-Snipped-# that they have been working on browser for metro and they are ready with the prototype. The new firefox looks same as Android browser. According to Brain you can do everything which a browser can do i.e. navigate the web, create tabs, bookmark pages, build history, retain cache, adjust preferences etc. The current prototype is based on Fennec XUL code. The Fennec will provide the power to be a multi process browser. Till now, no matter how many tabs or windows you open, Firefox always has a single content process. Mozilla plans to change that with new browser. As mentioned in the blog post, they are also working on platform integration. Metro snap is working in the prototype so that you can snap other metro apps and continue browsing. They have implemented Metro file picker, which will help users to open a file, multiple files, save files in metro. They are also done with windows 8 search contract. Using search charm you can search for anything you want with you default search engine. Windows 8 share contract has also been implemented. Using share charm you can share a firefox page to any other application.

The plan here is to make firefox compatible with Metro, so its market share can be increased. They believe that if a browser is default on Metro, it will also be default on Desktop. Well, they are not the only one to believe in power of Metro. Google is also working on developing a chrome metro app, which will be available with Windows 8 launch by the end of the year. May the best browser win!
