MIT Mechanical Engineers Bring 'Intelligent Co-Pilot’ For Cars
MIT's Mechanical Engineering Department student Sterling Anderson along with scientist Karl Iagnemma have developed a new semi-autonomous safety system that lets a person other driver control the vehicle for a brief period of time. The system employs an on-board camera and laser range-finder to recognize hazards in a vehicleâs territory (obstacles, barriers, other vehicles on the roadway etc.). The team formulated an algorithm to examine the data and establish the safer zones avoiding all the hazards. The system lets the driver control the vehicle, only taking over the car's control when the driver is just about to leave a safe zone.

Anderson has been studying this system last September onwards, and as per him this is an 'intelligent co-pilot' system that supervises a driver's capabilities to make the necessary adjustments that'll safeguard the vehicle. The major innovation is that the car is that it enables control-sharing with you. Even if you're new to driving, this system will look out that you don't hit anything.
