Microsoft Reveals More About Windows 8 Features

Microsoft briefed about the changes coming up with the next-generation Windows software that influences majority of the world's computers. Windows division president Steven Sinofsky hinted that major improvements are being carried out to a key Windows Explorer file management program to heighten its interaction with the upcoming Windows 8 operating system. In a #-Link-Snipped-# explaining Explorer modifications, Sinofsky said, "Windows 8 is about reimagining Windows, so we took on the challenge to improve the most widely used desktop tool (except maybe for Solitaire) in Windows. Windows Explorer is a foundation of the user experience of the Windows desktop and has undergone several design changes over the years, but has not seen a substantial change in quite some time."

New feature additions include a control "ribbon" for commands to make them more easily controllable to people other than "power users" habituated with Windows Explorer shortcuts. Alex Simmons of the program management team stated that the engineers commenced to "return Explorer to its roots as an efficient file manager and expose some hidden gems" in the form of handy commands many people are unaware of.

The first sneak peak of Windows 8 was provided by Microsoft in June. This operating system will perform on both personal computers and touchscreen tablets. Sinofsky presented just a few features of the operating system code-named "Windows 8" at a D9 technology conference hosted by All Things Digital. Sinofsky said, "Laptops, slates, desktops -- all can run one operating system." Windows 8 caters to many of the feature available in Microsoft's latest mobile operating system for smartphones, Windows Phone 7, including the use of touch "tiles" rather than icons to launch and navigate between applications. Microsoft assures to disclose more features of Windows 8 at its developers conference in Anaheim, California, opening on September 13.
