Microsoft Officially Unveils Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL Windows 10 Smartphones

Microsoft, just like Nokia isn’t very good at keeping secrets when it comes to its smartphone launches. In the past couple of months we have been hearing snippets and catching glimpses of their forthcoming Windows 10 flagship smartphones. The Redmond based giant officially took off the covers from their new creations, the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL at a glittering function in New York just a few hours ago. Both the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL run Windows 10 and are the most powerful Windows smartphones that Nokia or Microsoft has ever built. Considering their flagship status you have to pay a hefty amount to get your hands on one of these Windows 10 smartphones when they arrive next month for the public in the US. The Lumia 950 costs $549 (35790 INR) and its bigger sibling will set you back by $649 (42310 INR). So do these smartphones justify their prices? Let’s check them one by one, starting with the Lumia 950.

Lumia 950

Microsoft sticks with the same strategy that Nokia adopted with their displays. On the Lumia 950 we find a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protected 5.2inch Quad HD AMOLED display that has been garnished with Sunlight legibility enhancements and ClearBlack technology. Although the Lumia 950 may not be as good looking as the recently launched iPhone 6S you must not judge it by its cover as the magic happens underneath the hood. On the Lumia 950, you get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset that houses a 1.8GHz hexa core CPU, Adreno 418 GPU and 3GB of RAM.

One of the best things about Lumia smartphones have been their cameras and the Lumia 950 continues the trend with a 20MP backside-illuminated image sensor with a ZEISS lens on the rear that comes with the coveted PureView tag, triple-LED RGB flash and the capability to record 4K videos without any blur thanks to optical image stabilisation. On the front we get a rather modest 5MP sensor that can record full HD videos. The Lumia 950 comes with 32GB of internal memory that can be expanded with the help of microSD cards of up to 200GB. The Lumia 950 is powered by a 3000mAh battery that can be charged wirelessly and has to ability to gain up to 50% its capacity with 30 minutes of charge. One of the interesting features of the Lumia 950 is Windows Hello (which is currently in Beta), a facial recognition technology that detects your face with the help of the company’s own infra-red camera technology.

Lumia 950 XL

You might be guessing that the Lumia 950 XL is a super-sized sibling of the Lumia 950 with the same features. You are wrong though. Yes, the Lumia 950 XL sports a larger 5.7inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) resolution AMOLED display but it houses a more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset that has a 2.0GHz octa-core CPU, Adreno 430 GPU and 3GB of RAM. What makes the Lumia 950 XL one of its kind is liquid cooling of its innards. Microsoft has used the same liquid cooling technique that first featured on its Surface range of tablets. Both the Lumia 950 and 950 XL feature USB Type C connector port, an adaptive antenna and the same cameras and internal memory. Since the Lumia 950 has a lot of firepower it has been given a slightly large 3340mAh battery. Both of these devices support Microsoft Windows 10 Continuum technology which turns your smartphone into a PC with the help of the Microsoft Display Dock (shall be covered in another article).

Update: Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL: Prices in India

    #-Link-Snipped-#: Rs 43699

    #-Link-Snipped-# : Rs 49399

According to Amazon India website both Windows 10 smartphones are up for pre-order and will go on sale from December 11. If you decide to buy either of these smartphones you will get a #-Link-Snipped-#(Continuum Dock) worth Rs. 5,999 for free and if you are availing Lumia Device Buyback promotion you can get an Amazon India gift card worth Rs. 3000.

The prices of these products is however too steep. If anyone wants to invest over Rs. 40K on a smartphone why won’t he/she go for Android flagships and why would they go for an unfinished OS in its nascent stage that still lacks in apps.
