Windows 7, which runs on approximately 50% of computers in the world, will stop getting mainstream support from January 13, 2015. End of mainstream support means that Microsoft will no longer provide free of cost support and help regarding to Windows 7. However, the company would continue providing security updates till 2020 for Windows 7 Service Pack (SP) 1. Windows 7 was released in 2009 and was a huge hit among PC users. Being more stable than previous Windows versions- Windows XP and Vista, more than 100 million copies of Windows 7 were sold in just six months.

According to #-Link-Snipped-#, Windows 7 extended support is till January 14, 2020. Extended support is the period when the company provides free security updates for the product but no new features are added. However, it must be noted that this does not have any implications for downgrade option. Users can still buy OEM-licensed PC with latest Windows and downgrade it with Windows 7 or Vista. Also, the deadline of January 13 does not end the sale of PCs running Windows 7 Pro. The company officials have reportedly announced that they will provide one year prior notice to the end-of-sale date.

Microsoft has already unveiled the preview of its latest OS- Windows 10 for PCs. On January 21, the tech-giant will announce its plans for Windows 10 on phones and tablets during a press event. With the end of support to Windows 7, Microsoft clearly wants its not-so-tech-savvy users to upgrade to latest Windows versions. It’s worth noting that in February 2014, Microsoft Ends Support For Windows XP; Could Put Millions Of Computers At Risk and now it’s time to say goodbye to Windows 7, one of the most loved operating systems, too.
