Michigan University's SuperMileage Team To Build A 3,300 MPG Car

The SuperMileage Team of students from University of Michigan lead by a mechanical engineering senior and project manager Laura Pillari are in the final stages of building a car powered by a four-stroke lawnmower engine, capable of running 3,300 miles per gallon of gas. This year’s SAE International Supermileage Challenge is scheduled to be held at the Eaton Corporation Marshall Proving Grounds in Michigan from June 7th to 8th

The participants can only modify the vehicle’s powerplant to achieve higher mileage by employing above par engineering skills, along with using the regulative single piston and four-stroke engine. The current North American record of 3,169 MPG was set in 2008 by a team from Laval Universite, Quebec.

Although these vehicles are unsuitable for mass production, the fuel efficiency research involved in their development can empower engineers to implement new technologies. The fuel injection system used in the car claims of 50% fewer emissions while being significantly cost effective. Companies like Ford Research & Design, Falcon Motorsports and NSK Motion & Control have extended their support to the team develop this technology further.
