Metamaterials To Boost Efficient Wireless Power Transfer
Electrical Engineers at Duke University have concluded that artificial materials called "Metamaterials" should make it possible to improve the efficiency of wireless power transfer. With a large number of scientists, researchers and engineers focusing on development of clean tech, electric vehicles, low power consuming electric devices could replace the traditional alternatives available. In such a scenario, wireless power transfer to power these vehicle & gadgets holds much more importance than ever before. One of the main obstacles in wireless power transfer is that only a small amount of power can be transferred over a short distance like in radio frequency identification aka RFID devices. Larger amounts of energy transfer, as in lasers or microwave, results in burning effect on anything in its path. Professor Yaroslav Urzhumov of University's assistant research professor says that based on their calculations the man made metamaterials to increase the amount of power transmitted without the negative effects.

At present, we have the capability of close range wireless charging. However, it's not yet possible to charge an electric powered car wirelessly. Metamaterials could open up newer possibilities. Metamaterials are the exotic composite materials which are not a single substance - but an entirely man-made structure which can be engineered to exhibit characteristics not shown by any other material found in nature. Theoretically, as power passes through the metamaterial refocuses the energy and permits it to traverse the open space between with minimal loss of power.
Wireless transmission of power holds lot of potential and applications in modern electronic gadgets charging. We believe more intense research in this direction is the need of time.
