Memristors To Mimic Complex Brain Neurons Soon

If you don't know a thing about Memristors, we strongly recommend reading "#-Link-Snipped-#". The technology is so new that even the spell checker marks a red line below it to suggest Thyristors, Thermistors, Resistors etc. Memristors, in simple terms, are the 'memory resistors' that remember the amount of charge that passed through them. These new circuit elements are now opening multiple avenues of research. Recently, researchers found out that these memristors have the potential to mimic the neurons in brains. It won't be too far when the network of memristors will actually function like the neurons in human brain.

The new research paper published in the Nanotechnology journal focuses on the non-destructive study of physical properties of memristors, chemistry and structural changes that undergo within during their operations. John Paul of HP Nanoelectronics group says that understanding the exact functioning of these new circuit elements is the biggest challenge. It's interesting to study how these elements undergo massive, reversible change in their structure and resistance. Now that the researchers have thermal profile of memristors, the research in understanding the functioning can be accelerated. Combination of various techniques were used to figure out the exact channels where the change of resistance takes place.

Scientists used highly focused beam of X-rays to locate and image the 100nm channel where they found out change in resistance. With more data becoming available about these innovative components of circuit, it won't be too long that humans will have to struggle with the robots for their own existence.
