When applying the BODMAS rule, the answer obtained is -17.

The real puzzle seems to be why 90% fail?
It is elementary arithmetic.

-17 is a straight forward answer.

But i think the twist in the tale is the the bracket, i think it should start after second 5 where in people might get confused.

I don't see any twist in the tale. It's a fact that a lot of people aren't able to do simple calculation. I had asked similar problems in job interviews and would always find one or two candidates out of 10 who'd give me wrong answers.
