material search

i am looking for a material or combonation of materials (i.e. gas in a glass box) that will light up when a current is passed through it, but not so bright as to be hard to look at. it needs to be as small as possible and any color will work (exept perhaps really bright colors like bright yellow). and, here's the biggie, it NEEDS to be as transparent as possible. can this be done? i have been searching the web for an entire day then came apon your web site. this is out of personal curiosity.

i was looking into some kind of small glass box with a luminecent gass in side like neon, but i don't think that would be easy to look at, so im stumped.

any help whatsoever will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!😁
